Grapes of Wrath Summary for Chapters 21-25
The Joad's continue on their journey towards the government camp called Weedpatch. They finally arrive there by nightfall and there is a space open for them in Sanitary Unit 4. Quickly setting up their tarp, the Joad's fall asleep so they can wake up early in the morning and get to know the camp better. Tom wakes up first and smells something cooking. He finds a woman with a baby cooking breakfast. Two men also come out of the tent that are dressed in new clothing. The family asks Tom if he would like to eat with them, and Tom says he cannot refuse. The two men say that they can maybe help Tom get a job where they work for a nice man. While walking over there, the two men introduce themselves after Tom asks them what their names are. The older man's name is Timothy Wallace, and the younger man's name is Wilkie. Once the three men get to the farm, their employer is going spastic because the Farmers' Association cut back the wages even more, and the deputies are trying to set up a riot Saturday night at the government camp so they can get in and break it up. The men at the camp prepare for the rioters Saturday night, and the men at the camp find the rioters and quietly kick them out of the dance. Before the dance, Rose of Sharon is worried that she is going to hurt her baby or lose it because of a lady that says she is being sinful for going to one of the dances.Rose of Sharon decides to sit and watch but does not dance. Soon enough, the Joad's have to move on because they have not gotten any work and are running low on food. They hate to leave the Weedpatch camp, but they have got to leave in order to feed the family.
